Effective January 1, 2023, Assembly Bill 1041 added a "designated person" to the list of individuals for whom an employee may take leave to care for under CFRA. A designated person means any individual related by blood or whose association with the employee is the equivalent of a family member. The employee may designate one person per calendar year and the designated person may be identified by the employee at the time the employee requests the leave. |

Effective January 1, 2022, this policy has been updated to comply with AB 1578, which clarifies that an employee can take leave under CFRA to care for a parent-in-law with a serious health condition. |

Effective January 1, 2021, Senate Bill 1383 expands the scope of CFRA to include: job-protected leave to care for a grandparent, grandchild, or sibling; provides 12 workweeks of unpaid job-protected leave for a qualifying exigency; requires an employer who employs both parents of a child to grant CFRA leave to each employee for bonding purposes; and eliminates an employer’s right to refuse a “key employee” their right to reinstatement under CFRA only. CalHR Forms were also updated. |
